The City of Portage la Prairie's Youth Councillor experienced her last City Council meeting last night. Paige McCulloch says her time on council was somewhat crazy seeing as it coincided with her last year of high school, and many things changing for her.

"It's really nice to wrap up this one last thing from my last year at high school," says McCulloch. "The events I've got to host were highlights for me. First, I held the Meet the Councillors event at PCI back in December. And then more recently, the 5km Family Fun Run/Walk when we raised about $1100 for the Family Resource Centre."

She explains just being in the council room and interacting with all the councillors was a great pleasure, overall. McCulloch notes the largest learning curve for her and coming to understand something new included taking small steps when planning something or doing anything.

"Even though you might be thinking big and want big things, if you just take small steps, you'll get there eventually. Even a small difference is a big difference, really," continues McCulloch.

Councillor Masi told the council meeting that McCulloch's presence caught the attention of the Mayor of East St. Paul who visited their last council meeting. McCulloch outlines what transpired.

"The Mayor had seen me there and was asking who I was and what my position was," says McCulloch. "Now they're considering also having a Youth Councillor. I think that that is me making a difference just by being there and being that representation that we do really need to see."

McCulloch adds it's great to know something like that came about without really trying hard, noting it's simply a part of the position for which she signed up.

She says she's definitely keeping politics in mind for her career choices, while she's currently planning to go into law in the future. McCulloch says this experience will be useful to look back on and use in the future.
