The Caps are making a name for themselves as one of the premier teams in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League this season.

They're looking for their fifth win in-a-row as they host Interlake tonight at the BDO Centre. They're coming off a huge shootout win over first place Yellowhead to keep their streak alive and bump them into 3rd place. "Playoff hockey is different than regular season hockey, and the fact that the games we're playing now are relatively important, they feel like playoffs," says Head Coach Brad Gnidziejko. "We're trying to preach that we need to play simple, we need to play smart, play good between the dots and it will set us up for the postseason. It won't be fancy or scoring off the rush, it'll be good quality defence, good in the middle of the ice, and a lot of pucks to the net, and so far we've been doing that and it's working."

Caps forward Joey Moffat leads the league in points with 42. 19 goals and 23 assists in 27 games played. He's notched five against Interlake so far and says he's sticking to his game and trusting his linemates.

"We've been playing good in the last couple of games. Really working hard, and our line has been producing well. I can just find the open areas and bury my chances most of the time. I think I've got good vision too, so I can find my teammates well."

Taylor-ed To Fit

The Caps last loss came at the hands of Pembina Valley a few weeks ago, and Gnidziejko says the team leaders spoke up after that, and a familiar face has rejoined the lineup. "I don't know if it's because we've had an addition to the team with Lane Taylor coming in and showing what it takes to play at the next level," admits Gnidziejko. "We can talk about it, and we can say it, but until they see someone do it they never really have a true gauge. With the players' meeting they had, and the example that Lane has set for them, they're a totally different group now. They've all really stepped up, and it seems very infectious."

Lane Taylor made his return to the Caps at the start of their four-game win streak. He played 20 games with the Portage Terriers this season, earning a goal and an assist along the way. "It is what it is at the end of the day," says Taylor. "Coming down, no one wants to do that. Was I disappointed? Yeah, I was, but once you come down you bring what you learned (in the MJHL) back here and keep the same work ethic. Don't try to do too much and basically play the same way I did up there. It's been working so far."

Taylor protects the puck behind the net with the Terriers.

Taylor will surpass the 100 game mark in the AAA Midget Hockey League in 5 more games. "I'm in my third year with the team and they're a bunch of great guys in the room," says Taylor. "They want to win, and it's been some time since that Caps have had such a good winning season, but I think we have a good chance to win the league this year."
