Saskatchewan Avenue in Portage la Prairie saw a group of people advocating for the Vaden Earle family, who are trying to bring a Haitian child to Canada, after they were granted custody of her 2009.

Spokesperson Harvey Wiebe tells us since then, they've been attempting obtain a temporary residency permit, and have encountered numerous obstacles. He says they're advocating for the immigration minister to help.

"They've been trying to get a Temporary Residency Permit to bring Widlene (the child) back to Canada with them," he says, "Both Vaden and his wife are Canadian citizens. They were doing humanitarian work in Haiti and Dominican (Republic). They've been encountering a whole bunch of roadblocks, and so we want the immigration minister to act on their behalf."

Wiebe says they staged their advocacy outside Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen's office because she's indicated she supports them.

"What we'd like her to do is to bring our rolls of red tape, and our signatures that we're in favour of this family," he says, "And we'd like her to present that to the immigration minister Ahmed Hussein, and just show that Canadians across the country are aware, and they want our immigration minister to allow Widlene to come to Canada."

Wiebe hopes the national exposure will prompt the minister to rule in favour of the family. If it doesn't, he vows they'll maintain the pressure.
