It's another historic first for Portage la Prairie.

Students and PCI Teachers gather around at Mayor Irvine Ferris signs the Proclamation Mayor Irvine Ferris signed a proclamation declaring today Rainbow Day.

In honour of the proclamation signing a Pride flag was raised at City Hall today. Portage Colligate Students from the Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) club came out to be a part of the signing and flag raising.

Katja St. Lawrence is a grade nine student from PCI and shares this was a big day, noting it's been a long time coming.

"We put all of our ideas together to make this happen," says St. Lawrence. "It's always nice to have support."

Jennifer Mills is also in grade nine at PCI and she shares the QSA is a group that believes in change.

"It's so relieving that our small town is finally becoming super accepting of this minority that doesn't normally get recognized," says Mills.

Mayor Irvine Ferris insists this is really important because Portage is becoming a more diverse and welcoming community.

"It's a proud day for Portage when we see young people getting involved like this," notes Ferris.

Councillor Wayne Wall was also there today, and he shares that this was something he wanted to be a part of.

"Because of my experience with people I've known over the years who've actually left Portage la Prairie to be who they were, I wanted to be here," says Wall.

The Pride flag will be up at City hall until Thursday evening.
