Organizers of the RCMP Musical Ride held in Portage la Prairie in the summer are calling the event a success, after announcing it raised over $39,000.

Portage EX, Southport and Community Foundation of Portage and District (CFPD) partnered up to host the event at the PCU Centre in July. Crowds gathered to see two separate performances, with horseback mounties headlining a day of entertainment that included performances by the Diamond Disc Dogs and Metis Prairie Steppers.

CFPD executive director Mary Lynn Moffatt says each partner organization will split the proceeds evenly, and the funds will be re-invested into community projects.

"All three partners are going to be finding ways that the money will end up providing support in the community," Moffatt says. "From the CFPD perspective it will be done with our granting program ... and I know Southport will be making an announcement on what they're doing with their share, and I know Portage EX will be talking about what they're doing as well."

Moffatt adds the community response to the event was fantastic, as both shows were sold out. "It was an opportunity for members of Portage and the surrounding area to see a show of that type," she says.

The host organizations also said in a release donations will be provided to Portage Regional Recreation Authority, Citizens on Patrol Program, Ukrainian Nursery School and Big Brothers Big Sisters for their help with the event.

Moffatt notes the business community and volunteers were invaluable in ensuring the event went well.
