On this past Friday evening, several teens escaped the local youth correctional facility. RCMP Media Relations Officer Sgt. Paul Manaigre outlines what happened.

"On May 29, at 6:30 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of six young offenders attempting to escape from the Agassiz Youth Centre in Portage la Prairie."

He notes officers attended and were advised that five of the youths were successful in escaping under a fence and then fled on foot and were last seen running away from the facility in an open field.

A sixth young offender was apprehended before he could crawl under the fence.

The area was immediately contained by police personnel and with the use of an aerial drone and the Police Dog Services unit, the five youths were located and arrested within a very short time period.

Five male youths, between the ages of 15 and 18, have been charged with escaping lawful custody and prison breach.
