The Association of Manitoba Municipalities applauds the province's move toward slowly lifting restrictions around COVID-19 in the province.

Starting Monday, dentists, physiotherapists, retail stores, hair salons and restaurant patios will be allowed to reopen in Manitoba -- but at no more than 50 percent capacity.

AMM President Ralph Groening called the decision timely. "We knew this had to happen at some point especially with other provinces began to open up. We're pleased that this first step has been taken...there is a long road ahead of us and the financial hardships that COVID-19 has already placed on municipalities is pretty significant."

The province says restaurants will be allowed to open dining rooms and a limit on public gatherings may be increased in a second phase to begin no earlier than June 1st.

Groening said the province's announcement is a move in the right direction when it comes to responsibly reopening Manitoba's economy.

"When it comes to the security and safety of our people this is a good first step. We will continue to discuss with the federal and provincial governments to find ways in which we can support our municipalities and make sure that we are able to manage and work our way through the economic challenges that COVID has given us."
