For the seventh straight year, Best West Pet Foods in Portage la Prairie is making their list and checking it twice. The Angel Tags for PAWS project is underway for adoptable cats and dogs currently at the Portage Animal Welfare Society, where you can purchase items that are on each animal's wishlist. The tags can be seen on a Christmas tree in the store which shows which animals would get each item.

Sonja Brasseur is the manager of the local pet store and says it's a project they love to be a part of each year.

"It's a joy being able to have all the animals open their gifts on Christmas morning whether they have a home or not," says Brasseur. "There's a PAWS list. Things like food, litter, wet food, litter scoops, toys, catnip, scratch pads. That's what the animals and shelter will get."

Brasseur used to be on the board for PAWS and says seeing the cats and dogs first-hand inspires her to keep the program going. She adds they want to help each and every one of the animals in PAWS care.

Assistant Manager Julia Arndt has a long-time connection with PAWS, too, as she used to serve on the board. She has adopted and fostered some animals, including Kurt. Arndt says they love gathering toys and treats for them.

"I like to see the underdogs winning. I like to see dogs learning and growing and building bonds, getting more experiences and not having to scrounge for their food and run through the fields. I like it when they're home and loved," says Arndt. "I like helping people match up with their new partners, find them toys that are fun, and find them treats. It's fun to throw a gift bag together now and then for the ones in the foster home."
