Volunteers are needed Big Brothers Big Sisters in Portage la Prairie. The organization posted on their Facebook page that they are in need of both men and women for their programs. Executive Director Dawn Froese explains.

"At this point we're looking for a few men who would like to mentor boys on our waiting list. We're really asking for two, but if there's more, we have other boys on our waiting list that we'd like to match up with," Froese continued. "We're also looking for two women who would be interested in facilitating our 'Go Girls' program here in Portage. That's an eight-week program with a small group of girls from 12-14 years of age. There's a curriculum in place, and we give training and all that kind of thing. So those are our two main areas we're looking at with volunteers right now."

Froese says time commitments for the programs aren't huge, and especially with mentoring, catered to your schedule.

"For the Big Brother time commitment, it is two or three hours a week, but we're really flexible with that because we recognize that, if you work shift work, you may be working a week. And some weeks, it may only work for an hour. And you decide when that's going to work for you, it's not on a specific day. For the 'Go Girls' program, it would be some prep time and then about an hour-and-a-half for eight weeks."

Froese notes that the ideal candidates would "like kids and like to have fun."

She adds that if you aren't sure if you're a good fit, they are happy to meet with you and discuss their programs.

"Give us a call at the office, or stop in sometime, check out our website. Any of those things will give you more information. And we'd love to talk with you and just explain how we do things here. If it's not for you, or not for your right now, that's just fine."
