One of Portage la Prairie's main attractions is hitting double digits this week.

Stride Place is turning 10 years old.

Stride Place was slated for completion in the fall of 2009, but delays pushed its opening to February 27, 2010.

City Councillor/ Stride Credit Union CEO Brent Budz says Stride Place is a monument here in Portage la Prairie.

"When you talk to people visiting our city, they talk at great length about the facility and all it has to offer, not only for Portage residents but visitors to our centre. I'm very proud of it both from Stride's perspective of sponsorship and as well from City Council's perspective. It's been a tremendous asset to our community, and one that I know many people use."

Budz notes that Credit Unions like themselves and others across Manitoba recognize the role of being a strong community partner. Stride Credit Union currently owns the naming rights of the facility through 2030.

He says it's hard to believe 10 years have come and gone.

"When you think about all the things that have come to the community as a result of it. We've been put on the map from a national perspective namely for hockey events, curling events, local swim meets and hockey tournaments. It's a destination location because of having that facility. It has exposed our city and our region to so many more visitors and so many more people coming to visit that particular facility and using it."

Stride Place will be holding an all-day celebration on Friday, February 27, 2020, to commemorate 10 years.
