Manitoba First Nations Police Service have a quality candidate for employee of the month.

On June 25, MFNPS officers were alerted to a suspect involved in a hit and run and was known to police to be currently wanted on an unendorsed warrant for assault, forcible confinement, and failing to comply with several court ordered release conditions.

The MFNPS K-9 Unit arrived on scene and attended to an area where the suspect was last seen as a passenger on an ATV. Police say officers flooded the area and began patrols for the suspect and a short time after, the K-9 Unit located the ATV leaving a driveway of a local residence on Sandy Bay First Nation, with the suspect on the back of the vehicle.

Police activated emergency equipment, at which time the suspect jumped off the back of the ATV and began running back down the driveway.

K-9 Ceto was deployed from the vehicle and a warning was given by the handler, directing the suspect to stop or the police K-9 would be released. The suspect immediately complied with police demands, where he was arrested without incident. Police say a screwdriver and large amount of cash was located on his person.

The suspect, a 21-year-old male from Sandy Bay First Nation, was arrested on his outstanding warrants for charges of assualt, forcible confinement and several breaches of court orders.

The hit and run investigation is ongoing.

Shortly after the first arrest, police received information that a suspect wanted on several warrants was seen driving a yellow Ford Mustang heading onto the Sandy Bay First Nation.

Police located the suspect vehicle travelling eastbound on Main Road and activated the emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle stopped only for a moment before suddenly accelerating towards a residence on Centre Road.

The suspect male driver made an abrupt right turn, parked the vehicle, and fled on foot. The K-9 handler yelled two warnings to the male suspect however the suspect refused to stop. Ceto was once again released from the back of the police unit and both the K-9 and handler gave chase to apprehend the suspect.

Police say after a 500-meter foot chase, the suspect was apprehended by Ceto, arrested and taken into custody.

The 28-year-old male is charged with flight from police, resisting arrest, and driving while prohibited.

With these two arrests, Ceto now has a total of seven apprehensions for the month of June.
