The City and the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie are coming together to try and create opportunities for child care spaces in the community.

Councillor Sharilyn Knox says the issue came up at Monday's meeting at City Hall.

"We approved the terms outlined in a memorandum of understanding with the RM, where we would provide two acres of land for the purpose of operating a child care centre," says Knox. "It's another great example of a partnership with the RM that we do in the city and we're excited because it is the possibility of having new childcare spaces in our city, which we are definitely in need of."

Knox says it's an common issue that needs to be tackled, and she's happy Council came together on this project. She adds, it's something many people will benefit from.

"We hear it everywhere. We hear it when it comes to newcomers coming to our city. We hear it with people working and not having childcare spaces," says Knox. "It's an issue, not only in Portage, but across our province. So, any opportunity we have to provide more childcare spaces is a benefit to our region."
