The Member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa is speaking out against a move by the federal government to prevent credit unions from using certain terminology. Robert Sopuck says the Liberals' proposal to ban credit unions from using the words "bank" or "banking" in any of their literature is completely ridiculous. Sopuck notes "bank" is a generic term and people use the term "on line banking" all the time regardless of what their financial institution may be. He's urging the credit union movement to call Liberal Members of Parliament and tell them that this heavy-handed tactic is simply unacceptable. Sopuck notes there are approximately seven million credit union members across Canada, adding he's proud to say he's one of them.

He says frankly the banks are acting like bullies as they try to change the way credit unions do business. Sopuck notes banks already have an advantage because they can sell shares and raise capital while credit unions aren't allowed to do those kinds of things. He adds credit unions provide an incredible service to many small communities, especially in places where the big banks are pulling out. Sopuck says it's grossly unfair of the banks to try to bully credit unions and even more unfair for the government to support the big banks in this matter.
