A new sidewalk's going to be built on Gigot Avenue in Portage la Prairie, not far from Fort la Reine School.

City Council looked at three options, and chose to install the sidewalk on the north side of Gigot, between 10th Street NW, and 12th Street NW.

Councillor Melissa Draycott says they considered three options.

"Either a north option, a south option, or a combination of both," she says, "And try to compromise, and have the least amount of issues with either one of those options. There were a couple of different issues with both of the options, and so we just went ahead with the one that made the most amount of sense."

Draycott adds Council feels the north option is more practical.

"There's little impact on the trees, by moving the sidewalk closer to the curb," she says, "There's also a parking pad on the boulevard in that location that would be required to be re-located. Difficulties with the trees and stairs on the south side of the avenue are similar in nature, but there are further difficulties with elevation. As well, there's an uncontrolled pedestrian crosswalk with safety concerns in the combination option."
