Long Plains First Nation will go to the polls on April 12th. If the number of people running for a seat on the Council is any indication, it promises to be an exciting election. 11 candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to compete for four Council seats. With this many candidates, one would expect to encounter many different areas that are considered to be the main focus. Candidate Stephen Prince had this to say.

"My main goal is to represent the people and the community," says Prince. "We need to expand our social programs out here so that our people have opportunities that will extend right into the future."

It is Prince's first time running for Council but not his first time in the election rodeo. He ran as the Liberal candidate for the Portage la Prairie electorate in the 2016 provincial election.

Candidate Garnett Meeches, on the other hand, has had experience in Council politics before. He was on the Council in the early 1990's.

"My main focus would be on health care," says Meeches. "That's where I'm working now, for Dakota Ojibway Health Services. I would focus on health throughout the DOTC (Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council) communities. Implement some of the new programs and make some changes."
