Want to get out and get active?

Look no further. A duo in Portage la Prairie is offering a free weekly bike ride for all.

John Palmer and friend Willie are your guides as they take you through the heart of the city. Palmer says the group has been running for about five years.

"We had the mental health people interested in cycling because it's good exercise and good for mental health, which we all know. They were going to form their club, but they heard about us, and we said come along with us and we'll go together. That's basically how it started."

The bike ride kicks off at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. You're encouraged to gather at the Stride Place parking lot across from Splash Island. Palmer says there's one rule in place.

"If you're under 18, it's mandatory to wear a helmet. If you're over 18, we suggest you ride with a helmet, but you don't have to. I think pretty well everyone rides with a helmet anyway."

Palmer is no stranger to cycling. The soon-to-be 83-year-old has amassed a significant resume of cycling achievements, including working in the industry. He says the group encourages everyone to get out and be active.

"We have a lot of fun, and we don't go particularly fast. We wait for people if they're getting left behind. If people decide they want to go home, then okay, they can go home."
