The Family Resource Centre, (FRC) in Portage la Prairie has always been a place to bring families and people together, so their programming is vital to our community in a time of such division.

Program coordinator Peter Thiessen connected with us to talk about what has been going on at the centre.

He says it's great to be back with families for in-person programming.

"We have loved connecting with families as much as has been possible in the past couple of weeks. So, since we've opened back up to in-person programs, it's been some busy weeks. Very exciting as well."

Thiessen touches on the centre's policy on masks at the moment.

"For the time being, we are asking everyone five years and older to continue wearing a mask in the centre. Long-term, of course, we don't want to keep doing it forever, but for now, we are asking families to continue to wear it. We want families to feel comfortable. And we want to provide a safe experience for everyone who's coming to our programs."

As far as programming goes, Thiessen shares that it's exciting for the FRC to expand their programming to some groups of people who don't usually get a chance to participate at events, such as Dads and Grandparents.

Upcoming events up at the FRC:

  • "Family Game Night" Tomorrow, March 18th.
  • "Just Me & My Dad" This Saturday, March 19th
  • "Grandparents Get Together" Next Wednesday, March 23th

A returned sense of normalcy, is something that has been missing for 24 months and Thiessen notes that they are enjoying it.

"We are excited about things that are coming up. So, we are excited and, yeah, optimistic."

Thiessen adds that if anyone is interested in connecting with families and kids of different ages, the FRC has many options, and you are always welcome.
