Family members of Fort la Reine School students got the chance to head down to the school gymnasium Thursday afternoon to engage with their kiddos about what they're learning in mathematics.

The "Math About Me" event showcased a culmination of all the things the class was working on in math and using those skills in relation to personal details such as height and weight.

Claudia Verwey, a Grade 1 & 2 Teacher at Fort la Reine, explains that this was an excellent opportunity for family members to look at their students' hard work.

"It was a nice ending to their kind of intro unit for the year, which was just all about them."

Verwey says that the two different grades had different objectives regarding this project.

"The grade ones do a lot with like colours and just like basic numbers to 30, and my grade twos are doing a little more complicated math problems," Continues Verwey. "So, the grade ones they got to measure themselves in non-standard units like markers and tiny cubes. And my grade twos did more of the standard measurement, like weighing themselves and measuring themselves with a tape measure and things like that."

Verwey shares that the class covered as much math as possible while having fun and learning more about each other and themselves.

The Grade 1 & 2 Teacher notes that the school was almost shocked at how great the turnout was from family members coming to see their little math wizards.

"It was wonderful to see grandparents and parents, and some siblings from in the school got to come in and check out their siblings' projects, and we had a few school division staff and a school trustee, and it was really great."

Verwey adds that this project was actually more of an undertaking than she thought, but it was definitely worth it as it brought her class a ton of joy.
