Have you ever been curious about how your food gets from the farm to the table?

On September 15, you can find out all that you've wanted to know with Open Farm Day.

Wendy Bulloch is the Manitoba Association of Agricultural Societies Open Farm Day Coordinator. She talks about what the event consists of.

"It's an opportunity for people, that maybe have never had a chance, to learn more about agriculture," says Bulloch. "(We encourage people) to bring their kids out and learn about the industry and come to a farm. It's just a way to get a handle on all the different pieces and facets there is to agriculture."

There are four places offering tours around Portage this year. Verwey farms will be offering tours of their dairy, grain and beef farm. Shur-Gro Farm Services will offer tours of their business to educate participants about crop production. Farm Away Retreat will be open for guests to tour and learn about agricultural tourism. The Food Development Centre will be offering tours of their facilities and lab areas.

Bulloch outlines why it's important to hold Open Farm Day.

"We want to be able to build public trust with the consumer. The best way to do that is having them come to meet a farmer, or someone in the agricultural industry at their farm and to be able to share that story and ask questions and learn," says Bulloch. "That's our major overall goal. we want people to build public trust with farmers and having those insightful positive conversations."

Open Farm day has 56 locations across Manitoba for you to explore. Bulloch notes that hosts are volunteers.

"They're doing this voluntarily," says Bulloch. "They're doing it because they're passionate about sharing their story and talking about agriculture. That's one of the reasons why we've grown, people are realizing that they have to tell their agricultural story."
