Heather Stefanson is stepping down today as leader of the Manitoba Progressive Conservative party. She made the announcement to delegates at a party meeting Saturday where new rules for the next leadership race were being discussed.

"Serving as the leader of this party and as the Premier of Manitoba has been the honour of a lifetime," stated Stefanson. "I'm proud of our PC Team for their hard work to balance Manitoba's books, make life more affordable, and significantly reduce taxes and red tape."

After the PC's October 3rd provincial election loss, Stefanson announced her plan was to resign as leader, but she did not share a date at that time.

According to reports from the Canadian Press, Stefanson indicated in her remarks to the delegates she will be keeping her legislature seat for the time being, but hinted she may open the seat if the party's next leader comes from outside caucus. She currently sits as the MLA for Tuxedo.
