The Portage la Prairie School Division went over their Kindergarten registration numbers at last night's School Board meeting.

Assistant Superintendent Pamela Garnham outlines how the registration day went.

"We have 214 new students that are already registered, which is a great number for this time of year. Because we do registration in February, we do have a lot of influx during the summer, so we're expecting those numbers to grow."

She says it's healthy to see these numbers go up because that means the student population is increasing.

Garnham says there was one school that had higher numbers than the rest.

"Our highest registration was at Crescentview, but it is a K-4 school. Crescentview also has the French immersion, so we're looking at already having three French immersion kindergarten classes there, and that's great because the French immersion program is continuing to grow," says Garnham. All of the schools are looking really well with their numbers. The kindergarten registration also gives us an indication of the projected enrolment."

She says they saw bigger numbers this year than last year.

"Last year at this time we had 191 registrations, and we ended up by September with having 258," says Garnham. "The five-year average is 212, including this year. It is higher than last year, and the numbers continue to grow."
