The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre is on the hunt for volunteers.

They attended the Volunteer Fair at Stride Place in Portage last week.

Maria Victor is a program assistant, and explains who they are.

"The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre is non-profit and funded by the federal government," says Victor. "We have the settlement services, and the literacy part, it's like we're divided into two parts."

They're looking for people to help in their English class, as a second language classroom assistant. They want to pair ESL students with Canadians to help improve speech and literacy.

She outlines what you need to have to be a volunteer.

"There are no requirements to be a volunteer, as long as you're willing to help out and volunteer hours," says Victor. "We will give you the applications, and we send out emails when we need help."

Jeannine Vouriot is a volunteer at PLLC, and describes why she likes it there.

"It's just neat to understand their story and to listen to them," says Vouriot. "Even working with the girls upstairs and listening to their stories about how their culture is, and to go to the different cultural events that they have Portage. I love that."
