It's a story about Canadian and American history that readers need to be aware of.

That's from local author Terrie Todd whose new book 'Rose Among Thornes' will be released on Tuesday.

She says it's a fictional story based on history.

Local author Terrie Todd's new book 'Rose Among Thornes' is out August 31st.

"The main character is Rose Onishi. She's a Japanese Canadian girl who is relocated from her family home in Vancouver during World War Two to a sugar beet farm here in Manitoba. And it was inspired by my friend Terry Tully," says Todd. "His mother came to Manitoba that way and she ended up marrying the sugar beet farmer's son. And when I first heard that I thought, well, that that would sure make an intriguing novel."

The tagline for the book is 'Forgiveness is the deadliest force on Earth.' Todd says readers will take the journey with these characters as they struggle with their anger and how they try to cope with how they've been hurt.

"In my mind, it got expanded to where the farmer's son is a soldier, and he is imprisoned in a Japanese POW camp through most of the war, and so that's what happens in this book," says Todd. "They start writing letters without him ever realizing that she's Japanese, and so, you can imagine some of the angst that that creates when their worlds collide."
