Last week the Prime Minister renamed June 21st's  Aboriginal Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. Manitoba Métis Federation Portage Local vice chairperson Landeyn Aymont was there and says it's a much-needed catalyst.

(L-R) Landeyn Aymont with Thomas Mulcair, NDP leader (submitted by Landeyn Aymont)"That's a fantastic move in the right direction for sure," notes Aymont. "The word 'aboriginal' kind of gives you the perception that it's not original, whereas 'indigenous' means the original."

He says several things happened the same day that he feels benefits the indigenous people of Canada, including the renaming of the Langevin Building to Office of the Prime Minister and Privy Council, seeing as Hector Langevin was the man who established the residential school system, as well as repurposing 100 Wellington's former U.S. Embassy for all Indigenous peoples.

June 21st will be referred to as Indigenous Peoples Day beginning next year.
