A local landowner whose property was affected by a recent train collision says he is happy with how he has been treated by Canadian National Railway.

Les Bowes owns land east of Portage la Prairie where two CN trains collided on January 3rd of this year. He says he spoke to people with the company, and was happy with what he heard.

"The incident that happened on my property where two trains collided, speaking with the foreman and the different CN personnel, shortly after the incident, they were very transparent to me and told me exactly how it happened," says Bowes. "It was human error. Luckily no one was harmed and it just couldn't be helped."

Two locomotives and eight cars in total derailed in the crash. Some fuel leaked from the tanks, but no dangerous goods were spilled.

"A bit of my property was damaged, not from the incident itself, but from the clean-up. They went out of their way to contact me and ask me what they can do. They were very supportive of me and what I'm trying to do," says Bowes. "I was foresting the area right around where the derailment was, and they flattened out about half an acre of forested property I have."

He says CN and his family go back a century, as the railway has always gone through his land. After having conversations with people within the company, he says it's clear to him that CN values safety and the environment.
