While we are going through a period of extreme cold at the moment, there is light at the end of the tunnel as we are expecting to see some plus-temperatures early next week in Portage la Prairie.

Sarah Hoffman, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says that the shift in temperature from bone-chilling to above-seasonal will start to begin Saturday.

"We're expecting those temperatures to moderate starting Saturday because of a low-pressure system that will spread from Alberta to southern Manitoba across the prairies, and that will help draw up and mix down warmer temperatures. Then we are expecting an upper ridge of warm air to build in over the prairies by next week, and that will lead to above seasonal temperatures like the zero-degrees Celsius we have forecast at this time for Monday."

Hoffman notes that extreme temperature shifts like this are more common in Alberta than in Manitoba.

She adds that, while the low-pressure system will bring some nicer weather, it will also bring some snow but still not as much as earlier in the week.

"So, Friday night into Saturday morning, It will be important to check the forecast and road conditions before you head out. We aren't expecting the same intensity and depth of system as we saw earlier this week. It will be important to just double check before you head out."
