A 23-year-old woman has been arrested and faces numerous charges following a serious collision yesterday afternoon in Portage la Prairie.

According to police, Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 1, near the Portage la Prairie bypass on the east side of the city.

Police say witnesses advise that the driver of a black vehicle was driving at high rates of speed and was passing vehicles on a double solid line. The driver was travelling eastbound onto Highway 1, exiting the city of Portage la Prairie, when she failed to yield to traffic and collided with a semi trailer. Her vehicle spun out into the ditch, and she fled the scene on foot. The vehicle involved was confirmed to be stolen.

Shortly after, police say officers located the woman walking east on Highway 1, where she was arrested without incident. The same driver was involved in another collision earlier in the day, where she failed to stop and fled the scene.

Rebecca Contois, 23, has been charged with operation of a conveyance while impaired by drugs, refusal to comply with a drug demand, dangerous operation of a conveyance, two counts of failure to remain at the scene of an accident, and possession of property obtained by crime. She was treated on scene and then remanded into custody. Portage la Prairie RCMP continue to investigate.
