8:30 a.m.update - Trans Canada (#1 highway) between Portage and Winnipeg, Highway 16 and Highway 75 are now open

-----------------------------------

Another night of wind and another round of highway closures. With gusts around 80 km/h Thursday night, many highways in the area were closed and remain that way early today. A blowing snow advisory is in effect across the region and winds are expected to gust up to 50 for a good part of the morning.

RCMP began closing highways in western Manitoba around 9 p.m. as winds around 80 km/h and fresh snow combined for whiteout conditions.

High winds have also made highway surfaces extremely polished causing very icy conditions.

One caller to the radio station said he could only describe the Trans-Canada Highway west of Winnipeg as "brutal." That Highway is now one of over a dozen closures in the province. The caller says he wishes he had stayed home.

Another caller who was travelling on Highway 75 south of Winnipeg last night said that while the highway was open at the time, it shouldn't have been. She described complete whiteout conditions and several vehicles in the ditch. Highway 75 was closed later in the evening and remains closed as of 6 a.m. Friday.

Still closed as of 6 a.m.

The Tran-Canada Highway (#1) is closed between Portage and Winnipeg as well as between Portage and Austin. Highway 16 is also closed between Portage and Minnedosa.
