As the confetti is swept away from New Year's celebrations, now we need to look at renewing pet licenses so your pets, as well as your wallet, can enjoy 2022, as well.

Portage la Prairie city councillor Wayne Wall says all pet licenses expired at the end of 2021, but it shouldn't be a difficult process to renew yours for this year.

"Applications have been mailed out to all the people who had one in 2021," explains Wall. "If you don't have one, they're free if you register between the 1st of January and March 31st."

While you can get these for free, there are still some hoops you need to jump through in order to get your pet license. Wall notes you need to be up to date on your pet's rabies vaccination and you can find a license application on the city's website. The application and copy of vaccination can also be dropped off at city hall in an envelope or mailed in.

"If you don't do this before March 31st, there is a charge," adds Wall. "For a non-spayed dog or cat, it's $60, and all dogs and cats over six months old must have a license. The penalty for failing to obtain a valid license is $100."
