The Portage Regional Library's new electronic fob drop-off program hasn't sat well with many of its patrons. The new system required patrons to pay a deposit of $20.00 for a fob that will open the drop-off chute for books after hours. Librarian Percy Gregoire-Voskamp shares the reaction he's been receiving.
"It has not gone over great guns. People, I'm afraid to say, don't really like the $20.00 deposit. But we can't afford to give them away. But that's something that the board and I will discuss at some point. At this date, the fobs themselves are very expensive. And that's why we went with the deposit system. They'll get the money back."
Gregoire-Voskamp admits it is costly.
"$20.00 is an amount of money, And I understand that. It barely covers what it's costing us. A number of people have done so, and it works quite fine. But a lot of people are balking at the deposit. That's actually not going to be on this board meeting's agenda. We have a very full plate as it is. I don't know when we'll discuss that."
