The Portage Regional Library has adjusted its schedule to both accommodate patrons as well as keep people safe during the pandemic.

Head librarian Richard Bee says they've closed to the public as of Tuesday night.

"We will actually have our book-drop completely unlocked for everybody to use. Obviously, we're not going to be open for people to return their books or materials. Or, if they are unable to make it in, we can always renew."

Bee explains that this means that any items that were signed out this week will be due back later next month. He notes they're giving people plenty of time, adding they don't want everyone feeling like they have to come in when they're closed.

He outlines the manner in which they deal with returned items throughout the pandemic and concern for infection is concerned.

"We are in a bit of an involved process," continues Bee. "We have a bleach solution that we are using. So, when materials are brought in, we are asking people to put items into a basket. The basket is then taken to the backspace. Staff can just spray-down with the bleach solution, wipe down it, then return the item."

Bee adds they will still have staff in the building while closed to the public allowing you to call or answer emails. His personal email address is head_librarian@portagelibrary.com.
