The latest addition to Simplot Central Park is officially up and running.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held this past week to introduce the community to the McCain Interactive Water Feature. It will operate much like a fountain, which will be activated and used to spout water at different heights to add spectacle.

"This is really positive, especially for the north end community and all the young people in the community," says Portage MLA Ian Wishart. "It's great to have the industry sponsors as part of that and the province was very happy to partner with them, and the City, to make sure that we have a new facility in this part of the city, and it'll be great to build onto what's already here. And we look forward to what's coming."

Portage la Prairie Mayor Irvine Ferris says this grassroots effort dates back nearly a decade and its great to see recreational opportunities created for community members in Portage's north end.

"There's been a lot of people working to bring this state to fruition," says Ferris. "And there's been a lot of work and a lot of volunteers and sponsors involved in making this a reality for Portage la Prairie and for kids here."

The park is planned to be a community hub with a skate park billed as the next major project.
