With new public health orders now in effect in Manitoba that bar individuals who are not fully vaccinated from attending such things like restaurants, gyms and sporting events - Portage la Prairie Mayor Irvine Ferris is urging community members to be kind to one another.

"Business owners and recreation facility staff, they've been mandated to check health status at the door," says Ferris. "This is not something they chose to do."

As of Sept. 3, attending sporting events and concerts, attending indoor theatre, going to the gym, dance and symphony events, going to the movies, casinos, bingo halls, VLTs, nightclubs, and all other licensed premises are strictly for individuals that are fully vaccinated.

"I ask people don't take it out on the business owners, their staff, or the staff at Stride or any recreation (facility)," says Ferris. "If it's a political issue for folks, contact the MLA or contact the Premier. These folks working in these businesses, working at the rec centers, they're just doing their job and I really ask people not to harass them, to be polite."

As of Tuesday, additional orders include reducing the maximum number of people allowed at outdoor gatherings to 500, down from the current limit of 1,500 - and includes summer fairs and festivals.
