It's the last day of school before Christmas break, and North Memorial School in Portage la Prairie held its seasonal events for students and parents.

Principal Val Smith says their Christmas concert included students from kindergarten to Grade 6.

"We've had such a festive December," says Smith. "Our show was fantastic to a full house in our gymnasium with the festivities carrying on with the craft evening and beading classes. Parent cooking has been wrapped up in December and to kick off the holidays on Wednesday, our school will be participating in a school-wide Gym Blast."

She explains the Gym Blast has several activities scheduled this morning that build team spirit and kindness toward each other.

"They have to cheer each other on and do different activities in one big station, and lots of supporting of one another for lots of fun," notes Smith. "And then that afternoon, we'll be having Santa Claus come and visit all of our students."

She notes their Christmas concert included kindergarten starting it all off and ending with a Grade 6 performance.

"We had some fantastic ensembles this year," continues Smith. "The little kids are always cute no matter what they do, but our Grade 4s, 5s and 6s really had some showstoppers. We had some readers theatre and the Grinch song, along with Boomwhackers in Grade 5. To top it off, Grade sixes were excellent role models playing two songs using the ukuleles."

Smith says they're getting ready for the Christmas holiday wrap-up today, and they're kicking it off with the Gym Blast bang and a visit from Santa.
