A Portage la Prairie social media page has been set up to support Ukrainians that are in town as well as those who will be coming here.

Blair Hordeski is one of the administrators for the Help Ukraine / Portage la Prairie Facebook page.

"Well, two-fold. Basically, for old people like me, Facebook is still a great way to disseminate information," says Hordeski. "We're looking at this as a platform. We don't know what the days and weeks ahead will look like as far as Ukrainian people coming to Portage la Prairie and coming to Canada, but we know that they're going to need some things and they may need help. We think that it's good to have a Facebook page like this just to share information to get the information out because we all want to help. We all are emotionally invested and we want to help, but we don't even know what the help is yet."

He explains it's a way for them to share any help they realize is required for Ukrainians coming to our city.

"They may need employment," continues Hordeski. "They may need to accommodate. We want to make sure that those people that are out there that want to help. They're aware of what is needed. And the other piece is, we use the Facebook page to celebrate what some of our great people of Portage la Prairie are doing to support Ukraine. We have students from our high school that are doing great things. If you drive past the high school, you see a beautiful Ukrainian flag out in front of the school. That was driven by students. They wanted it up there and they got it up there. We had our local fire department make a donation of some firefighting gear to be sent to Ukraine and we just need to celebrate those things."

Hordeski notes this helps them share information and celebrate what is being done.

Alina Flyk came to Portage two years ago.

"I think Portage is a very quiet and nice place where you can start your life easier than in a big town," says Flyk. "People are very friendly. When I just moved here, a lot of people helped me to understand where everything is located."

Flyk says she's thankful for the social media page, noting Hordeski is helping Ukrainians to join and connect together.

"I wish that there will be peace in Ukraine soon," says Flyk. "I always type home and ask for support to send money back home."
