Last Friday was significant for Syngenta's Elm River Crop Protection Farm just south of Portage.

Company officials from across the country, as well as from head office in Switzerland, toured the facility. It's one of two in the country, and the only one in western Canada.

Dr. Rolf Furter, Head of Global Product Development from Basel, Switzerland, calls the facility an essential piece of the company's research and development operations. He adds it addresses all major crops of commercial importance in Canada, such as canola, as well as minor crops like potatoes.

Farm Manager Lorne Letkeman sees the work done here as critical, because new products can be evaluated in the real world.

Jason Pickering, Crop Manager for Cereals in western Canada, points out work on Horizon and Axial is important because of increasing wild oat pressure. He adds the research results are positive.
