After several years at the helm of the Portage Potato Festival Committee, Nadine Birston has stepped down as chair. She says it wasn't an easy decision, but felt it was time to pass on the role.

"I've been doing it for over five years now, it was just a matter of time to bring in some new blood and fresh ideas. I've totally enjoyed my time with the festival, so it's with a bit of a heavy heart that I've done so, but it's time."

Birston explains it's been exciting to see the festival become more popular each year, adding she's worked with a number of great people over her years in the position.

"It's a well-oiled machine and I think our attendees have come to enjoy it more and more every year, so that's a good thing. I hope that means this festival will continue to be stable. The people, I can't say enough about the people. The people I've been able to work with on the committee over the years have been some of Portage's best citizens, they've made me a better person and I'm really blessed I've worked with them."

As for the future of the festival, Birston hopes to the see the new co-chairs continue to lead the event in the right direction, and hopes to see continued community involvement.

"I hope that it continues to become a staple in Portage and that the citizens of Portage la Prairie realize what a gem that festival is and how important it is to the community itself and all of the pieces it brings together. It's not just for the attendees, but for non-profits, our local musical talent, and again it's even bringing in more and more people from outside of Portage."

She notes she'll continue to work with new co-chairs Cindy McDonald and William Utech behind the scenes, to ensure they become well-acquainted with the role.
