The Future Links Prairie Junior Championship golf tournament has wrapped up their third round at the Portage Golf Course. The winner of the tournament was Wesley Hoydalo from Selkirk, MB. The top six golfers received invitations to the National Junior Tournament.

Portage had three competitors in the talented field. Carson Inman improved his score from day two but couldn't match his day one total shooting a 93 and finishing in second-last place. Owen Gillespie withdrew from the final round of competition. Clark Bolton shot his best round of the weekend with a 75, three strokes better than day two and four strokes better than his first round. He would end the tournament in sole possession of 17th overall.

Portage Golf Club General Manager Deb Pritchard spoke about the future of high-profile tournaments in Portage.

"Ideally we'd love to be able to host either a provincial or national event at least once a season," says Pritchard. "It's great exposure for the club, the course and the facilities to a wider range of people. This tournament drew in traffic from Toronto through Vancouver so a very wide spectrum of players. It's great to be involved with provincial and national stuff."

She also talked about how the course was liked by the out of town golfers.

"So far so good, it's been a great experience," notes Pritchard. "They've said a lot of positive things about the course. Those that were here for the Maple Leaf Junior Tour, some kids played in that event in May, and they commented on how far the course has come condition-wise since then. We had a bit of a rough spring and we still do have some rough patches out there but it's come leaps and bounds in the last couple weeks. Hats off to Ferrell Asham and our grounds crew for the work they've done."

Pritchard adds she would like to thank all of the volunteers that made this event possible. Without them, she says, pulling off a tournament this big would not have gone as smoothly as it did.
