Yesterday Fire Fighters from the RM of Grey and the Elmcreek Fire Station battled a grass and brush fire that burned for nearly ten hours.

Leen Blok is the Deputy Chief of the RM of Grey Fire Department, and he reveals, they were called to the fire near in the Portage Sandhills at 1:00 p.m. Crews didn't get back to the station till 11:00 p.m. The fire was in about a four to six square mile area with no good roads.

"We attempted to make fire breaks to contain it at first," explains Blok. "With the wind conditions, it was fairly challenging. It's a difficult terrain to travel in. A lot of walking for the guys and gals."

He said, it created a lot of heat, and luckily the fire only damaged fencing. Nobody was hurt.

Blok reminds everything that during this time of year you have to be extremely careful as it's so dry.

"It popped up very quick," shares Block. "People need to be careful with what they throw out their vehicle window, or when people burn garbage. You have to be very careful."

A fire ban has been put into place in the RM of Alonsa. Barb Zalluski of the RM says all burning in the RM is banned to prevent fires. She stresses, it's extremely dry, and this needs to be done. She thanks everyone in the RM for their cooperation in this Matter.
