Municipal Relations Minister Eileen Clarke has announced the provincial government will be changing legislation to allow the public to access online assessment information.

Clarke notes this type of change will allow municipalities to strive for transparency, as well as reduce the need to print and mail statements, which will allow municipalities to save money in the long-term, along with the positive environmental effects.

"Right now, all property owners receive their notice of assessment via mail," said Clarke. "The proposed amendments will enable assessment notices to be sent electronically, as well as allow municipalities to post-assessment roll information online."

The proposed amendment would allow property owners who don't live in Winnipeg a chance to view their assessment notices as soon as this spring.

"Planning appeals are fundamental to open and fair planning systems, and are necessary for upholding transparent and accountable decisions," said Clarke. "These amendments will streamline processes, improve transparency and ensure timely resolutions for planning appeals with the municipal board moving forward."
