The following is a summary of police activity in the Central Plains Area (Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities). The reporting dates are between 2017-07-31 and 2017-08-06. During this time period, police responded to 311 calls for service

 

LICENSE PLATE THEFTS

Portage la Prairie RCMP are investigating several incidents of license plate theft. Multiple residents across the city have reported the license plates from either the front or rear of their vehicles are missing. Police ask that motorists be mindful of their license plates, and report any theft as soon as possible. Thieves will steal license plates in order to hide a stolen vehicle in plain sight. Reporting the plates as stolen gives police another reason to pull over a suspicious and possibly stolen vehicle.

 

SPEEDY DRIVING

A motorist was observed traveling at 136 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 2 in the RM of Victoria. The male driver (22 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $521.75.

A motorist was observed traveling at 148 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 2 in the RM of Victoria. The female driver (25 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $678.75.

A motorist was observed traveling at 146 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 2 in the RM of Norfolk Treherne. The male driver (24 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $652.50.

A motorist was observed traveling at 137 km/h in a 100 km/h zone in Portage la Prairie. The male driver (35 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $535.00.

A motorist was observed traveling at 135 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 2 in the RM of Norfolfk Treherne. The male driver (19 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $508.75.

 

TWO VEHICLE COLLISIONS

Portage la Prairie emergency services responded to a two vehicle collision at the intersection of Saskatchewan Avenue and Elm Street near Burger King. A grey SUV collided with a minivan as it failed to stop for a red light. A female driver (66 years old) was issued a fine for failing to stop for a red light. No one involved was seriously injured as a result of the collision.

Portage la Prairie emergency services responded to a two vehicle collision at the intersection of 3rd Street NE and Lorne Avenue E. A pick-up truck and an SUV collided, but no one involved required medical attention. A male driver (35 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $175.30 for failing to yield the right of way.

 

VEHICLE THEFT

Portage la Prairie RCMP are asking for the assistance of the community in identifying suspects involved in the theft of a motor vehicle and failing to stop for the police. Around 11:00 PM a white 2017 Chevrolet Equinox was stolen from the 400 block of 5th Street NW. The same vehicle was seen a short time later, and when officers tried to pull it over, the driver refused to stop. A short pursuit ended with the vehicle being abandoned in a field near Old Bridge Road. The occupants of the vehicle were not located. Investigators ask that anyone with knowledge of this incident contact the Portage la Prairie RCMP at 204-857-4445. Anonymous tips can be made through Manitoba Crime Stoppers.

        

IMPAIRED DRIVING

Portage la Prairie RCMP was called to the area of Beach Road in St. Ambroise for a possible impaired driver. Officers were patrolling the area when they came upon the suspect’s vehicle, towing a boat from the beach. Once in contact, the investigator was able to determine quickly that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, with his subsequent breath sampled well over the legal limit. The male driver (68 years old) will have his driver’s license suspended for a minimum of 3 months. The vehicle was towed and impounded at the owner’s expense.

 

STOLEN MOTORCYLE

Portage la Prairie RCMP are asking for the assistance of the community in locating a stolen motorcycle from the area of 17th Street SW. Between July 27th and August 5th, a black 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 650 was stolen from outside the home. Investigators ask that if you see this motorcycle of one matching its description you notify the Portage la Prairie RCMP of its whereabouts. ATV HIT AND RUN

Shortly after 10:00 PM the Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the Shady Oaks RV campground in the RM of North Norfolk, as someone was struck by a side-by-side ATV. When police arrived the suspect had already left the area, but the victim and witnesses provided a description of the driver and their vehicle. The victim received non-life threatening injuries as a result of the collision. Police have identified a 53-year-old male from the RM of North Cypress-Langford as the driver of the ATV. Charges are pending in the matter.

 

SINGLE VEHICLE ROLLOVER

Portage la Prairie RCMP was called to a single vehicle rollover on Hwy 1 near Hwy 16 in the RM of Portage la Prairie. The driver of an SUV was taken to hospital for minor injuries as result of the collision, which occurred when the driver swerved to miss a deer. Police wish to remind all motorist to be mindful of animals on the roadways, which can often be unpredictable.
