TRUCKER DRIVES OFF HIGHWAY

On October 3, Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to a single vehicle collision on Hwy 1, just west of Hwy 13. A semi-truck had reportedly driven off the roadway following a construction area, and the driver of the vehicle was unable to get out. Emergency services and fellow truck drivers assisted the male driver (56 years old) in getting free; suffering only minor injuries he was transported to Portage General Hospital for treatment. No charges are pending in this matter, but police encourage all motorists to keep their attention on the roadway at all times.

DANGEROUS DRIVING

On October 4th, Portage la Prairie RCMP were made aware of a dangerous driver heading towards Portage la Prairie, after a tow truck driver was nearly sideswiped on Hwy 1. The vehicle was located, and once in contact with the male driver (27 years old) officers quickly determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and his subsequent breath samples were over double the legal limit. He was released from police custody after a short time, set to appear before the court at a later date. His driver’s license was suspended for a minimum of 3 months, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 60 days at the owner’s expense.

IMPAIRED DRIVING

On October 7th, Portage la Prairie RCMP observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of Sidney. As officers came in contact with the vehicle, the driver was displaying several signs of intoxication. The male driver (59 years old) was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. He refused to provide breath samples to police, and was charged with that offence as well. The driver was released that same day, set to appear before the court on a later date. His driver’s license was already suspended at the time of the offence, but he was issued a further suspension. The vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 60 days at the owner’s expense.

ASSAULT WITH WEAPON

On October 7, shortly after 4:00 AM, the Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the area of 11 Street NW, where 5-6 people were reportedly fighting, one of whom may have been bleeding from a possible knife wound. Officers arrived on scene to find broken beer bottles and cans on the roadway. A vehicle was found a short distance from the area with a passenger who had been stabbed, and was escorted to Portage General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Investigators determined that an acquaintance of the victim was the assailant in the matter. Daniel St. Paul (29 years old) of Ebb and Flow First Nation was located and arrested for two counts of assault with a weapon. He was held in custody until such time as he could be brought before the court.

DUMPSTER FIRES

On October 8th, Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to two separate dumpster fires between midnight and 4:00 AM. Police were first called to a garbage bin behind Dairy Queen on Saskatchewan Avenue. A second fire was reported in the bin behind What’s the Scoop at 7th Street NW. In both instances police and fire fighters did not see anyone suspicious, but investigators are certain that a member of the public either saw or heard the person(s) responsible for the damages. If you know who caused these incidents, please contact the Portage la Prairie RCMP at 207-857-4445, or your local police detachment.

IMPAIRED OFFROAD DRIVING

On October 8, shortly before 2:00 AM police received a call regarding an off-road vehicle being driven by a suspicious male in the area of 6th Avenue NE and Oak Bay. Patrols of the area resulted in officers locating a male near the area the ATV was last seen. The intoxicated male was not cooperative with police when questioned about his actions and identity, and was arrested for obstruction when he provided a false identity to officers. Vincent Nathan Richard (29 years old) of Sandy Bay First Nation was held in police custody until such time as he could be brought before the court.

BREAK AND ENTER, THEFT

On October 8, shortly before midnight a member of the Portage la Prairie RCMP observed a pair of suspicious males walking behind Dino’s Appliances on Saskatchewan Avenue. What caught the eye of the passing officer was one male making an attempt to scale the building. Officers closed in around the suspects who surrendered to police without incident, both arrested for breaking and entering and theft. In speaking with the suspects it was determined that only one of them had planned the heist, and so he remained in police custody until being brought before the court. William Kingsley Beaulieu (36 years old) of Portage la Prairie has been charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit theft, possession of break-in instruments, and failing to comply with a probation order.
