The RM of Portage Council heard concerns at today's meeting about the speed of CN Rail trains passing the Agrium site near Bloom, west of Portage.

Agrium's Jim Olson asked for help in getting the trains to slow down while passing the site, so if there's a derailment, potential damage to the 27,000 ton low-pressure anhydrous ammonia tank would be less.

He stresses the tank is protected by 10 foot high dike, designed to hold its volume while deflecting things away.

Olson points out concerns have come from Agrium management and employees, as well as area residents. He believes the potential exists given the size and speed of a train, although he admits there's been no engineering study on the matter.

Reeve Toby Trimble has heard the same concerns, and has spoken to Transport Canada. He's been advised to organize a joint presentation with Agrium, and that will happen as soon as possible.
