The spring melt on Lake Manitoba's over, but in its wake, there's a mess along the shoreline, including at Delta Beach, north of Portage la Prairie.

The issue came up at yesterday's RM of Portage la Prairie Council meeting, and Reeve Kam Blight says it's something they deal with every year, adding clean-up's a provincial responsibility.

"I don't have specific timelines as to when they're going to do it, just yet," he says, "But it's probably going to be into June. That concerns us -- we constantly try and work with the province on this. Unfortunately, every year, though, we experience this when the (Portage) diversion's operating -- not just the diversion, but the Waterhen and the Whitemud, they all bring in extra debris, and when the lake level's high, a lot of that washes up on the shoreline, and it can make for some unsightliness."

He says the debris has an impact on the restoration of the public beach area.

"There are certain circumstances that impact the progress of the paving and re-development of the public beach," he says, "We will have to get crews out to clean up our public beach, and we will do that. We have to be somewhat cautious when the lake is as high as it is -- we needed to watch and see what happened before we proceed, but I think that the situation's settling down, as far as lake levels are concerned."
