Environment Canada issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch as of 3:16 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Meteorologists are reportedly tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing powerful wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain. This thunderstorm is 20 km northeast of Portage la Prairie, tracking slowly northward.

Environment Canada's radar indicates that between 40 to 60 mm of rain will fall over the next hour.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Earlier in the afternoon it was a Thunderstorm Warning meaning active storms were in the area. Some heavy rain did fall to the northeast and northwest of the city but in that round of storms, it was pretty quiet in Portage outside of some gusty wind causing plenty of dust to blow around.
