A group of Grade 11 and 12 students embarked on a unique journey, crossing the pond to explore the vibrant cultures of Spain and Portugal.

Mckenna Sharpe, a Grade 12 student, says she is thankful for the opportunity to experience what could be a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

"I believe that travel is education. So, I think it's amazing that the school gave that opportunity for students to get out and see because you learn so much, and whatever you learn, you can bring that anywhere you go in life, and no matter where you are in the world."

She mentioned that travelling with her classmates was one of her favourite activities.

"A big part was exploring the new cities. Europe is very different from Portage, so it's nice to see the different cultures, try new things, make the most of it, and, of course, be with all my classmates to share."

Sharpe recalls the challenge of adjusting to different time zones, particularly when they encountered a seven-hour difference from Portage. It was a test of endurance, but she says it added to the adventure.

She also said that they got to see so many fascinating locations.

"We explored a lot of the culture and learned about the history of the two countries, exploring different churches, cathedrals, temples, and palaces, seeing the different landscapes, and of course, the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean."

She notes that being able to try new food and have a new cultural experience was amazing. Getting to see a Flamingo show and hearing live singing in Portugal, along with hearing different languages, was especially interesting.

Sharpe encourages anyone who gets the opportunity to have an experience like this in or out of school to do it.

"I would recommend going. You will have an amazing time, and if you think, 'Oh, none of my friends are going,' I can guarantee you that by the end of the trip, everyone you've gone with will say, 'I made a new friend.'"
