An update's been provided following the Tupper Street Family Resource Centre recent, massive water damage.

Board vice-chair Barry Rud gives us an update.

"As soon as we discovered that the water in the hot water tank supply line had been going for all of the long weekend, then we called the remediation company who came in and assessed what needed to be done," says Rud. "They got the inch of water that was on the floor of the centre cleaned up and sucked up, and out of there. They assessed what kind of things were damaged."

Barry RudHe explains the lower two feet of all drywall was removed. Rud says this means any wall between two offices has the bottom half removed. He says insulation's been pulled up and large air blowers are drying any remaining moisture.

"We've recently been advised that we do have no mould issue," continues Rud. "We're waiting for quotes from two additional contractors so we can get the building put back together. A quarter of each wall has to be replaced."

Rud notes all the carpets on the floor will have to be replaced. He says the actual work won't take as long as it will take to obtain all of the quotes.

He adds the board is grateful to the community for its patience and staff who are holding the Centre together. Rud says they're offering programs to families at other locations, with the Herman Prior Centre and Portage Friendship Centre both having offered space. He notes the Legion and Library also offered space. Programming in September will take place in the Herman Prior Centre and Friendship Centre.

Rud explains adults can come to the centre and use the computer, fax and phone, which are all services they've offered. However, he notes, programs with children are not continuing at the Centre itself for the time being, due to open walls and wiring, etc. Rud says this means partial services are available at the Centre, but not the full slate, with the remainder at other locations.

He says if you have to have a disaster, it's good to get the experts in to look after it as they've been able to do as soon as they did. Rud adds it's brought the staff together more as a team, which is a plus.
