The UV index is a mystery to many. It is included in the daily forecast and usually ranges from 3-7. But what does that number mean?

UV stands for Ultraviolet and is a type of light. Ultraviolet rays are emitted from the sun and can cause sunburns etc, but also have benefits if absorbed in moderation including Vitamin D.

The Ozone shields us from the majority of UV rays but depending on the conditions the amount of UV rays that come through vary, hence the UV Index.

As you can see in the chart above, the UV Index number gives people a guidline as to how dangerous it is to be out in the sun.

Generally in summer in Manitoba if the sun is shining it will be 7.
