A 54-year-old Winnipeg man faces fines and charges after allegedly blowing more than three times the legal limit during a traffic stop last week.

On June 20, at approximately 7:40 p.m., an Amaranth RCMP officer was travelling on Highway 16 and observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.

The officer conducted a traffic stop on Highway 16 at Road 71 North and was able to smell an odour of alcohol from the 54-year-old male from Winnipeg and asked the driver to provide a breath sample on a roadside screening device. The result of that test was a fail.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a conveyance and taken to the Portage la Prairie RCMP Detachment to provide breath samples to be analysed. Police say the result of those samples were more than triple the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle.

The driver faces charges of impaired operation of a conveyance and operation of a conveyance while over 80mg%. The driver also did not have a valid drivers licence and was issued a ticket for $672.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 60 days and the driver was released to appear in court at a later date after sobering up in cells.
