For Grade 7 and 8 students in the Portage la Prairie School Division, the basketball season has come to an end. Last night, the Yellowquill School Rajahs beat the Ecole Arthur Meighen Eagles to claim the girls banner.

One of the coaches of the Rajahs, Jayla Calder said it was a solid win and added she was happy how far along the team came this year.

"It was an exciting game. We came together and ended up winning by quite a bit, but it was close in the first half. If you would've seen our first game of the year, you would have never guessed that we would win a championship, I think we lost by about 20 points. The girls just put in the effort all season long. With no buses, Covid and everything like that, they still came together and it was just an awesome finish of the year."

Next year may be a bit of a rebuilding season for the team as many of the players will be off to high school.

"We had a team of 14 girls and 10 of them are in grade eight. So I'm hoping that majority of them go on and have the confidence to try out for the teams at PCI or wherever they go next year. Lexi Henderson had about 20 points last night and she has been consistent all year long. But it's really a team effort because we have four or five other girls who were scoring four to six points each night. It's been really nice to coach them."

Calder commented the players were excited but added that extended to the coaches as well.

"I think I was more nervous last night than some of them. I was trying to keep them calm. It's been a while since we've been able to have a league with Covid and everything, plus I was on mat leave for a while before that, it's been really exciting for all of us"

In the boys championships, La Verendrye School took home the title. The school is becoming known for producing some pretty good players as it was their third championship in a row,
